All the key tactical and positional ideas for both players are covered, and crucial move-order nuances are highlighted. The writing is informative and entertaining at times, but the problems come in when we run in to variations that transpose to "typical" 1. Nc3 and then the recommended Such a closed and boring line.
Is this why we play the Alekhine? Still, good coverage of most lines and "interesting weapons" training. I've been using The Alekhine confidently in blitz thanks to this book.
Dec 10, Steven rated it really liked it Shelves: chess. Used to play this opening before I knew what openings were. So fun to read.
Excellent study of all the main variations of the Alekhine so you can pick the kind of fight you want. Only complaint is that I wanted to see more tactical analysis in a lot of the positions and Taylor is mostly analyzing best play variations.

This book is certainly among the better opening surveys I've read. Though the sections on the modern line 4 Nf3 get a little tedious, understanding the underlying strategies developed by Kengis and Larsen are essential to playing this defense against a prepared e4 player.
As soon as the book departs from these difficult responses Taylor lightens up considerably. I even laughed out loud a few times. He's a great writer to spend time with and this book is a solid introduction to a daring defense This book is certainly among the better opening surveys I've read.
