The book is poorly organized, poorly researched, and it's clear that little scholarship or editorial insight has gone into its making.
Just as an example, the book actually offers 'pishach' I might be spelling it differently than in the book as a possible boy name. The word actually means 'ghost,' or 'spectre. Disappointing to see Penguin India back such shoddy work. I bought this book so that it would help me choose a good name for our baby due in a couple of months.
However, this is just a huge compilation of all Hindu names that are present in mythology and history, including ravan, kumbhakaran, shurpanakha, etc. I bought this book online despite I had seen it earlier and not liked it, still I bought it as there are hardly any other big books on names for babies in India.
This book has a collection of names which I found to be too old, plain and long, names that are almost obsolete. Many names are missing and the way they are presented is not easy on the eye, with reading becoming difficult just with the difficult names to pronounce. A section for the names with "SH" is missing, as there are many names in this category. I found this book ok, still it may be handy to some.
Can be subjective. Very good book on Hindu baby names. The names collection is wast and most names I have heard for first time.
Majority of the names are from Mahabharata and Ramayana. Other than that good collection of names is also there. My baby name from here itself. Thanks Maneka. I was not able to find anything useful.
Someone has just copied and pasted evrything under the sun which doesnt makes sense even for 20th century parents. And at last the packing was very poor. It seemed like someone sent it from a pirated market. It's a good book, one who wants sanskrit names for babies, this book includes names for both boy's and girl's. Its a dictionary for names. The book is light weight, contains pages, paperback form, pages are of pretty good quality.
It's not just a book. A must if one loves to read and know more about the depth of a name. If someone is looking for uniqueness in a name with a beautiful meaning. Go for it. No one has time to read the vedas. Maneka Gandhi has done the amazing research work. One person found this helpful. The book is very good, I had this book before but found lost somewhere.
See all reviews from India. Top international reviews. Its a collection of Hindu names with meanings, pronunciation.
Its a good reference for selecting the Hindu names for the to-be parents. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. It useful. Pretty outdated. Well, I guess I would agree to most of the reviews so far that this book is not listed by gender, a lot of names are those you wouldprobably never name your baby and so on.
BUT the important thing is it this book is unique and if you take the time and effort to find a name that you like then it is worth the effort. Afterall you are interested in all but ONE name for the baby. PS: This book wont help if you are looking to name twins!!! I was surprised to see the bad reviews for this book. This book is a collection of names in alphabetical order. Unfortunately it is not seperated gender-wise. I bought this book when I was expecting my second son.
I wanted a name which went well with my first son's and I must say the book served its purpose. There are a lot of names from the epics, but you can ignore them if you are not interested.
It is just a vast collection of names. Please note that it takes a few days and a lot of patience to go through those 20, names. Interesting to read about the ancient sanskrit language and names and their meanings.
Can learn a lot of new words. Load more international reviews. There were too many boy names than girls, is what I think. Very few Tamil, Malayalam names - mostly Sanskrit. Not a good book for picking modern baby names. All the names in this book are super old. Not very relevant for modern times, especially in America.
