Not rounded at all, so they don't have the majesty of complete, rounded shapes sufficient unto themselves, bu "Triumphs of nuance and suggestion. Not rounded at all, so they don't have the majesty of complete, rounded shapes sufficient unto themselves, but little moving heads where all their strange life seems to be concentrated.
They arrive sliding across the sea, but not swimming, as if they were birds almost, and they bring death with frailty and graceful ferocity. Sometimes they sing, but only for themselves, and their song isn't a call to others, but a sort of longing lament. They soon get tired and when evening falls they lie down on the little islands that take them about and perhaps fall asleep or watch the moon. They slide silently by and you realize they are sad.
Along the way, he collects legends, relics, and stories of the island-dwellers: an elegant married woman's love of an Azorean fisherman, glimpses of a whaling expedition, and assorted shipwrecks, both figurative and real. In France he was named a Chevalier of Arts and Letters. Get A Copy. Paperback , pages. Published April 23rd by Archipelago Books first published More Details Original Title. I'm in need of a couple good one afternooners. I've been hearing about Tabucchi a bit on goodreads and wanted to check him out. The nearly square Archipelago Books edition I got from the public lib is just aesthetically spot on. This piece is a quaint collection of stories and fragments all connected to the Azores involving whales, island gods, travelogue and Melville excerpts, and a certain tinge of sadness.
Tabucchi writes with a very plain spoken tone, akin to Borges or Marias, like he's just I'm in need of a couple good one afternooners. Tabucchi writes with a very plain spoken tone, akin to Borges or Marias, like he's just sitting down next to you in a bar because you look interesting to him and he is going to tell you that may "draw out the sense of life.
Tabucchi mi trascina e mi fa sognare come pochi. All of the novels are highly philosophical in nature.
All constitute a very enjoyable reading, Tabucchi being a truly a gifted story teller. Of these "Indian Nocturne" was my favorite definitely deserves 5 stars on its own. The other two are very nice. Some of the stories in them are excellent.
E claro, vale a pena essa penada. EN A small book with short stories about the Azores, from italian writer Antonio Tabucchi , who fell in love for Portugal and never left it, in his life and in its works. Most of the histories are about the place, and whalers' habits. In the end, it's a small book that worth read in a flash. Apr 02, Amari rated it really liked it. Most of the stories did not appeal to me, but the last two did.
Apart from personal taste, I recognize also the non-appealing stories as very fine literature.
Jul 27, Tonymess rated it really liked it. Tabucchi was an Italian writer, a professor of Portuguese literature at the University of Siena and spent six months of each year in Portugal as well as translating Portuguese writers into Italian.
The Azores were colonized by the Portuguese in and Tabbuci visited the islands, in his Prologue telling us: I am very fond of honest travel books and have always read plenty of them.
They have the virtue of bringing an elsewhere, at once theoretical and plausible, to our inescapable, unyielding here. Yet an elementary sense of loyalty obliges me to put any reader who imagines that this little book contains a travel diary on his or her guard. The travel diary requires either a flair for on-the-spot writing or a memory untainted by the imagination that memory itself generates — qualities which, out of a paradoxical sense of realism, I have given up any hope of acquiring.
Having reached an age at which it seems more dignified to cultivate illusions than foolish aspirations, I have resigned myself to the destiny of writing after my own fashion. Raccolta bella quanto breve. Deixo-vos umas palavras que transcrevo.
