If scandalous family histories full of murder, black mail, and maybe even some incest, interest you, than you should check this out! The tale that ensues is one full of betrayal, secrets, blackmail, some understood incest, and lots of death. Well, although the Mannons back stab each other every step of the way through the plays, their love is undeniable and I would like to argue that it is this familial love that becomes their undoing; ever heard of too much of a good thing? Well the Mannons take it to a whole different level. In the first part of the trilogy Homecoming , we meet Christine and Lavinia. Christine is a mother who is no longer in love with her husband and has been having an affair with her own husbands illegitimate cousin.

Eugene O'Neill's updated version of the Oresteia. When they succeed, Lavinia turns to her brother Orin Sir Michael Redgrave to help bring the lovers to justice, but when they succeed, Orin goes mad and his suicide note may come between Lavinia and her new suitor, Peter Niles Kirk Douglas. Written by Kathy Li. I loved it!
At first glance, Rosalind Russell at age 40 is a bit long in the tooth to play Lavinia; but once you get past that, she is quite good in the part. Michael Redgrave playing the son Orrin is a bit stiff in the first part of the movie, but once he goes "crazy" with guilt in the last part, he is brilliant.
Raymond Massey, playing the father, is in the film only a short time, but is memorable as Ezra, the war weary husband to Christine. A young Kirk Douglas is good too as Lavina's suitor. This film has it all - murder, greed, dark family secrets, revenge, lust. It is too bad this film is sadly forgotten. It flopped when it opened in - probably too long and involved for audiences a that time.
And too bad Rosalind Russell did not win the Oscar for it - what an injustice. Russell had been considered the favorite to win, but a long shot nominee, Loretta Young won for "The Farmer's Daughter" a far lesser film than this one, in my opinion.

Mourning Becomes Electra
The action of the trilogy, with the exception of an act of the second play, takes place in or immediately outside the Mannon residence, on the outskirts of one of the smaller New-England seaport towns. A special curtain shows the house as seen from the street. From this, in each play, one comes to the exterior of the house in the opening act and enters it in the following act. This curtain reveals the extensive grounds--about thirty acres--which surround the house, a heavily wooded ridge in the background, orchards at the right and in the immediate rear, a large flower garden and a greenhouse to the left. In the foreground, along the street, is a line of locust and elm trees. The property is enclosed by a white picket fence and a tall hedge. A driveway curves up to the house from two entrances with white gates.
Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953)
Originally released by RKO Radio Pictures at nearly three hours running time, it was eventually cut to minutes losing more than an hour after it performed poorly at the box office and won no Oscars. It has since been restored to its full length and shown on Turner Classic Movies. An Oscar upset occurred in connection with the film. All who saw it had taken it for granted that Rosalind Russell would win for her performance as Lavinia, to the point that Russell actually began to rise from her seat just before the winner's name was called. A wealthy New England family, the Mannons, await the return of patriarch Ezra, general for the Union army, and son Orin, a timid young man before becoming an Army officer at the end of the Civil War. Lavinia, who adores her father, is shocked to see mother Christine kissing another man. Worse yet, the man is sea captain Adam Brant, someone whom Lavinia has long fancied herself, even though her childhood friend Peter Niles has been courting her.
