View 1 comment. An Excellent novel from the legendary writer The way the author has portrayed the characters and the narration is simply awesome. A must read.. May 16, Nivedha rated it it was ok. I was quite astonished to find that I didn't like this book at all. I haven't one thought that a Great Author my favorite too like Kalki could write this kind of bad ones too.
I mean, how could he disappoint me like this? Let go of the story and characterisation, the writing also disappointed me. This book provides a testament that the man who created the magnum opus Ponniyin selvan could even write an average, not-so-good book like this. The major disappointment was the use of English and Sans I was quite astonished to find that I didn't like this book at all.
The major disappointment was the use of English and Sanskrit words. At first, when I caught those words, I firmly believed that this could never be Kalki's work. I just checked the author profile and goodreads again and again to make sure that I bought the wrong book.
Alas, I was wrong and this was written by the great Kalki himself. Why English in a Tamil book? I couldn't withstand this. The story was loosely written very loose than you could imagine! Firstly, Muthaiya doesn't seem to be a so-cool thief. Secondly, Kalyani seem to be a freak. She was given much freedom and was also affectionately called the "vaayadi" but all her rational behaviour altered all of a sudden and she becomes a "damsel in distress" She didn't respect the name 'vaayadi' She could have simply shaken her head in negative for the marriage.
At least, this book, in the name of a novel, wouldn't have been created. I don't want to say more. I'm so disappointed. I think I've used this "disappointed" word a lot of time. Well, you could see how disappointed I'm that I've used this word for the umpteenth time.
Aug 09, Shekhar rated it really liked it. Having read some of the other books by this author, mostly historical fiction, it was a pleasant surprise to read a modern era fiction from this author.
Weaving a simple next door story, Kalki has crafted a delicate art in carving the plot of a common innocent man who is accused of stealing money in the process of saving his innocent younger sister, imprisoned, turning into a jailbreak, eventually forced to be a much dreaded burglar.
With the subtlety of his love towards his sister and his love, Having read some of the other books by this author, mostly historical fiction, it was a pleasant surprise to read a modern era fiction from this author. With the subtlety of his love towards his sister and his love, the author has drafted the fate of this naive burglar which is worth reading. Though this book was eventually shot into a movie, I think the author has done a fair job than the director to this story.
May 13, Dinesh Babu rated it really liked it. A slightly modern era fiction from Kalki Its about how situations and love for his close ones makes a thief out of a normal guy and his struggle to get back what he lost, during the transition. Kalki didn't disappoint me. His narration of riverside, ponds, forest is awesome. The choice of words and the comparisons are just too good. Make u realize how good our language is.
The baseline of the novel is 'Love has the power to A slightly modern era fiction from Kalki The baseline of the novel is 'Love has the power to steer someone to do something so extreme , that he might not be able to live his normal life again'. Love is everything. Good book to read. Some sentimental facts like caring sister, honest police men made the story worth a lot. This is the first non historic Kalki s novel which i read and this way of narration is also good.

Wonderful novel by Kalki which leaves you pondering whether the protagonist was indeed a thief? Jul 21, Karthika Joe rated it really liked it. Not the best from Kalki. Jul 22, Arvindh Shanmugam rated it really liked it. Jul 23, Babu Gandhi rated it really liked it. A book that made me wonder about the string of insignificant events which lead to so many major life changing situations.
The book is nothing compared to his exceptional work in ponniyin selvan. Not worth the read and for a fan it ll definitely be disappointing. Sep 04, Sindhurajam rated it really liked it.
