Unusually for the Hilliards, there is an instrumental accompaniment to some of the numbers, namely Stephen Stubbs on the lute, and he is also given a six-minute lute solo towards the end of the recital. The programme also includes three comparatively lengthy sacred motets in Latin and seven French songs with rather less-than-sacred texts!
The chansons are mostly for five voices and are here given the kind of light but perfectionist treatment that has made the Hilliards so popular. The voices blend immaculately, and for performance there can only be full marks. Unfortunately, however, the sound lags a long way behind. Although this is a digital recording DDD , there is a considerable amount of tape noise to be put up with, so much, in fact, that the beautiful lute solo loses a lot of its attractiveness and becomes something to get annoyed about.
And for that reason, I would say that this CD is one purely for dyed-in-the-wool Hilliard fans. See all reviews from the United States. There's a problem loading this menu right now.

Orlande de Lassus
Orlande de Lassus also Roland de Lassus , Orlando di Lasso , Orlandus Lassus , Orlande de Lattre or Roland de Lattre ; , possibly — 14 June was a composer of the late Renaissance , chief representative of the mature polyphonic style of the Franco-Flemish school , and considered to be one of the three most famous and influential musicians in Europe at the end of the 16th century the other two being Palestrina and Victoria. Information about his early years is scanty, although some uncorroborated stories have survived, the most famous of which is that he was kidnapped three times because of the singular beauty of his singing voice. While in Milan, he made the acquaintance of the madrigalist Spirito l'Hoste da Reggio , a formative influence on his early musical style. He then worked as a singer and a composer for Costantino Castrioto in Naples in the early s, and his first works are presumed to date from this time. Next he moved to Rome, where he worked for Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany , who maintained a household there, and in , he became maestro di cappella of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran , the ecumenical mother church of Rome and a spectacularly prestigious post indeed for a man only twenty-one years old. However, he stayed there for only a year.
