The eternal throbbing beat below her breastbone. Spanning almost 50yrs, this is the story of Emilia. The vast majority of the story takes place during the Mexican Revolution and does a good job shining a light on how discontent, injustice, and passion bring about such wars. Emilia's childhoo 3. Emilia's childhood friend, who grows up to be her love, Daniel, is more than full of passion for the war and constantly leaves and is at battle leaving Emilia. Their love story is one people in their younger years would find exciting, dramatic, lustful, and love torn; a lovestory that is exciting to read about but hellish to live.

Emilia's father was a pharmacist, and she starts to study under him and grow her own passion but for medicine. She naturally and fights her way to becoming a doctor, no mean feat during this time period. She meets a Dr. Zavalza and love triangle ensues. I do wish we could have had some scenes from Daniel to get a feel for the battles but this look at it from ordinary citizens was encompassing in its own way, too. Emilia's aunt and a poet who is in love with said aunt, were my favorite secondary characters and I would happily read the aunt's life story, what a woman she sounds like.

Years pass quickly and Emilia becoming a doctor and having children is quickly told. This rushed ending kind of gave all the emotional upheaval and drama, I as the reader, went through less gravitas. Lovesick couldn't be a more apt title as Emilia and Daniel's relationship wasn't exactly healthy. Daniel's passion for the war and how he constantly puts it above Emilia and Emilia's inability to let impulsive Daniel and his frenzy for fighting go in favor of Zavalza's calm supporting love will make you want to pull your hair out.

The historical context was weaved expertly into the story and Emilia's life journey will definitely make you feel. View 2 comments. Beautiful novel. If you enjoy Isabel Allende then you should try this book by Mastretta. It has a very similar feel - huge historical events with passionate romances using magical realism. While a big fan at the start I grew tired of Daniel, but still understand that his role in Emilia's life was important and helped her character develop.

I had never studied modern Mexican history before and this was a great way to learn about the revolutions in the early 20th century. What a perfect title for this book. The main character, Emilia Sauri, is love sick, from the age of five, for Daniel Cuenca. But life gets more complex and she discovers she loves two men. The story is rich, complex, intelligent, romantic, and very satisfying. Mar 21, Nathalia Vargas rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites.

Mal de amores is a romantic novel, but not in a cheesy way. It is very realistic, has a political contex: the time of the Mexican Revolution. It tells the story of Emilia: the pursue of her dreams and the love of her life, Daniel. Emilia grows up to be a strong and independent woman. This characteristics make her one of the few women of that time late 19th century-early 20th century with privileges such as having a career and stand up for herself.

This is because she has a loving and caring fa Mal de amores is a romantic novel, but not in a cheesy way.

This is because she has a loving and caring family, her parents and her aunt are her friends. This is one of the things I love about the novel. Despite her on-again off-again relationship with Daniel, Emilia is a role model for me, because she is self-determined, independent and strong. She also has this tender, romantic and loving side and it doesn't make her weak; on the contrary, it makes her vulnerable, and therefore human.

Mal de amores is one of my favorite books. What is supposed to be the story of a modern, independent, working woman during the Mexican revolution. But not sure what it means that she also lives in her father's house under the watchful eyes of the older generation, pining for a man with other priorities, and following him unhappily through life.

Maybe Mastretta is saying this, that modern ideas quickly die in traditional household dynamics? Or maybe she really believed Emilia Sauri to a liberated woman for the time? Nov 05, Marcelino Rodriguez rated it liked it. Though the writer make a good effort on describing stories and situations on her caracters i found it confussing sometimes, also you might get lost thru the time skipping forward and backward. Good book for a trip or vacation. Feb 13, Emily M rated it liked it. Listened to as an audiobook to keep up my Spanish.

Not hard to follow at all plotwise, which was good, but is in the melodramatic-women's-novel-from-Latin-America-inspired-by-Isabel-Allende category, which I tend to avoid. Jan 02, Paulyna Copado rated it it was amazing. Amazing good story. Sep 11, Rocco Carella rated it liked it. I like the atmosphere of the book and often I really love some sentences, that are so genial.

Just I found the general concept and the story a little bit repetitive in its dynamic. Mar 30, Norma rated it it was ok. I was pretty skeptical about this book and only read it because it was part of my book club selection. Somehow, I identified with Emilia, not really for her passion and forceful loving, but for her endless moments of solitude, confusion and yes, boldness. Traveling in search of knowledge and experiencing the life, just to feel an intense necessity and itch to be back not only on Mexican soil, but at the family home.

Making it even more interesting is the setting in a revolutionary Mexico, that e I was pretty skeptical about this book and only read it because it was part of my book club selection. Making it even more interesting is the setting in a revolutionary Mexico, that explains a bit of our present history, a country that keeps bleeding from its fractioned political parties, and its inadequacy towards democracy and social movement. The characters besides Emilia and Daniel, i.

The storytelling is straightforward, it is a no brainer, but quite entertaining. I would read it again just to extract the tons of marvelous quotes that are worth keeping for life!

This was a decent book, but the love story isn't nearly as sweeping or important to the book as it is billed. Much more attention is given to the political struggles of early 's Mexico than anything else. Also, the main character, though a tirelessly working doctor in her professional life, is selfish and spoiled in her personal life.

Still, I liked the book and learned a bit about Mexican history.
